What To Know About Food And Travelling

By Carla Rossouw

A part of travelling is learning different cultures around the world. Culture encompasses a lot of things. It involves the languages, the traditions, the beliefs, the legends, the history and the food. In this article, we are going to focus on food specifically those recommended in reviews such as hotel reviews and restaurant reviews. Below are some tips on how you can satisfy your taste buds while you are enjoying a vacation.

One of the many things that people worry about when they travel is the food. Different countries have different taste preferences. Korean people tend to have a spicy menu while the Japanese people tend to have fresh goods. American menu is known for its oil and portion while French menu is known for its elegance. When you are in another country, you need to understand how people view their food. You need to respect what the locals like. You do not have to love the same food that they love. However, you need to follow certain unwritten rules that go with it. For instance, if you are in Japan and you are eating ramen noodles, it will be good if you slurp the noodles. It is actually a good idea to ask the locals or the shop owners how the food should be eaten. This way, you can maximize the experience and you may actually enjoy more what you are eating.

When dining out in an unfamiliar restaurant, it is always best to keep things simple. Never order dishes that you are unfamiliar with. This will lessen the chances of you being disappointed and embarrassed. What you can do is to ask the staff about the dishes. Ask the ingredients and how the food is prepared. You can also ask for house specialties. Most restaurants will boast of their best dishes to have people try them. Believe the starred items in the menu as they are, more often than not, tried and tested by ordinary people and gourmet experts.

It is equally important to watch your health when you eat out in a restaurant. It is always easy to indulge more however you can never bring back things once you swallowed them. This means that you have to take care with whatever you put inside your mouth. Here's the thing. If you cannot finish the dish, don't finish it. If you know you cannot finish the whole portion, request for it to be halved. You can tell the staff to pack the other half for take-out. If you have friends with you, share the meal with them. This way, you will not be tempted to finish the whole thing.

Food is very important in every culture. It is a defining factor when travelling. However, there are really no rules about food. You just have to enjoy it and appreciate it in your own way. If you can't enjoy the taste, at least respect the person who prepared it for you.
