By David Francis

New Zealanders or 'Kiwis' as some people call them are a very happy bunch of people who welcome tourists with open arms. There is two stunning islands to visit and kiwi hospitality shines through the both. You will be welcomed as part of the family and kiwi hospitality is renowned the world over for having a warm welcome. The lifestyle here is outdoors, where the locals are active and enjoy playing in their surroundings.

New Zealanders make use of their rugged and beautiful country and live an outdoors life. Most of them are into hiking, skiing, swimming, trekking, boat trips and jumping off high bridges to get kicks! The open wilderness make New Zealand a great country to do these activities.

Maori culture shines through in New Zealands history. The Maori people who came across from the Polynesian islands in giant canoes have a rich and steep culture in New Zealand. They have many sacred sights throughout the country, none more so than Cape Renga in the north island where traditional beliefs say that that is where the souls of fallen warriors go back into the ocean to the islands where they came from.

The cuisine in New Zealand is excellent, with many local delights featuring across the menus. The countries most predominant dishes consist of lamb, venison, pork, seafood and local honey. There is also many great wineries in the Otago and Canterbury regions which are world renowned for their elegance and taste. Cities like Auckland and Wellington have Michelin Star restaurants and a chic cafe vibe.

Traveling around New Zealand is very easy. The roads are great and well maintained, the busses are of the highest quality and catching a short flight from one city to the next is only one or two hours journey time. It is really fun to drive around New Zealand yourself with spectacular mountain passes for you to thunder through in your rental. It is true that exploring New Zealand is one of the best travel experiences you can ever have.

There are other options for traveling around like hitchhiking, which is very safe in New Zealand and a common practice amongst backpackers and tourists alike. It is a great way to meet other backpackers and locals and have a nice chat (and a free ride!).
