Where To Start With Training Golden Retriever Puppies

By Jaclyn Hurley

Golden retrievers are a much loved breed of dogs. They have such an appealing look and they have high intelligence. They also have an outgoing, friendly nature and real appreciation for human company. They are very obedient too so they take instructions quite well. What is important is to begin training golden retriever puppies sooner rather than later.

Golden retriever puppies can be trained without a professional trainer. It helps to start training right away when the puppy is still adjusting to its new environment rather than wait until it already develops habits and try to break them. Puppies aged at least 8 weeks old can take instruction.

Owing to their friendly nature, golden retrievers respond to affectionate training. Speaking positive words to them and petting them communicates that they have done something good and they will repeat the action to get the attention again. Food treats also work well but these should be used minimally. For one, this breed gains weight quite fast. Also, dogs should not believe that getting fed depends on their behavior.

You will find that these breed of puppies learn quite fast and they have the ability to learn a number of things at the same time. A good approach is to tackle the habits that the puppy comes with such as jumping, biting and chewing on things. These are not bad habits but the puppies need to learn what they can and cannot bite and chew on and bite.

Use words like no and stop undesirable habits and off to get them off furniture. Keep the tone of your voice sharp enough for them to differentiate from a voice of praise. Use the same words and tone consistently and the puppy will soon learn to differentiate bad actions from good ones. Those in the household should also use the same words.

Early training should also consist of teaching your dog to sit. Where to go should also be instilled. There should be no accidents on the carpet or in the house after a few weeks of consistent training. You may not be able to tell when something is about to happen but as soon as it starts to, direct the puppy outside and they will soon learn to head outside when they need to do the deed.

Grooming is another habit that the puppy should be accustomed to. Right from the start, get them used to being shampooed, dried and brushed down. Do look them over as you clean them. Look for ticks and other pests and any other signs of infection. Taking care of symptoms early stems any problems before they become serious.

Many people do not dedicate enough time to train their golden retriever puppies. The result is usually an ill-mannered and problematic adult retriever. Start with simple things and then go on to more advanced things. Starting early is also good because you can enlist the help of a professional trainer if your efforts do not pay off. Be consistent and you will have a well behaved retriever that you and your family will be able to enjoy for years.
