When Families Want To Go Horseback Riding Long Island Is A Perfect Location

By Elsa English

The scenery includes wind swept sand dunes and trails alongside the blue ocean. During the summer season, equestrians are not allowed on some of the public beaches. But, when looking for scenic trails on which to enjoy horseback riding long island is the place to find them.

Spectacular vistas fill the eyes with wonderful things to look at. The soft sound of waves washing on the shore fill the ears. The distinctive scent of salt water wafts up to fill the sense of smell as the animals carry the riders over the sand with waves lapping gently at their hooves.

A girl with a smile on her face reaches out and pats her horses neck. A soft whinney from her mount seems to express pleasure at her touch. A line of horses and riders walks along enjoying their surroundings and seemingly joining with nature.

A one hour trail ride is available on a daily basis. There are various requirements imposed by the various livery stables. Helmets are mandatory at all for safety purposes.

In addition to the beaches there are nine miles of bridal paths through Hempstead Lake State Park. Professionally trained trail guides accompany most groups of riders. They can point out the turtles and rabbits who are permanent residents in the park. They can alert riders to an eagle soaring overhead.

In the summer, when school is out, children can attend a week long horseback riding camp at one of the stables. As the child learns how to care for a horse, he learns how to wash, groom and feed the equine. There is learning about the equipment and how to bridle and saddle a horse.

They learn about trimming the hooves and shoeing the horses. They are told what the horses eat, how often they are watered and if they are let out to pasture every night in good weather. They are taught to ride in an outdoor enclosed ring.

They anticipate riding lessons the most. It means they will soon go out on the trails. Summer camps are attended by girl and boy scout troops. They and all children enjoy their days of being around these beautiful horses and learning to ride.

The five lakes are circled by trails for the riders to use. They to up and down over gently sloping hills and alongside a gold course. In autumn, the colored leaves are outlined against a blue-gray sky and the air is a little brisk.

Stables on Long Island offer other riding opportunities. For those who like to do a little birdwatching as they traverse the forested trails, they can see scarlet tanagers and yellow-bellied sapsuckers on wing in Prospect Park. Chipmunks scurry through the brush.

Enjoy trails along the lake. Riders of all ages can be taken on some of these trail rides. The horses are well-schooled and walk over the trails in a uniform fashion. If a group is considered able, the guides will allow the horses to trot as well as walk.

Horseback riding is a wonderful activity for children, families and couples. It is a way to connect with these beautiful animals and nature at the same time. It is a vacation, or regular weekend activity enjoyed by many on trail rides during all seasons.
