It Is Wise To Invest In A 72 Hour Emergency Kit

By Rhea Solomon

Even though it is not a pleasant thought, nobody can predict a natural or man-made disaster. Hurricanes, tornadoes, or even terrorist attacks can all result in catastrophic effects with regard to one's personal safety and health. Unless individuals are properly prepared, such as those who own a 72 hour emergency kit, considerable harm and loss may occur.

In certain instances, warnings of disasters are offered by government organizations, which allow individuals to properly plan for the event. However, there are many scenarios where warnings of this type are simply not possible, and people are left with only several minutes to evacuate or prepare for the situation. This can motivate people to make spur of the moment decisions, which often lead to unsatisfactory results.

The fate of those faced with natural or man-made catastrophes primarily depends on individual preparedness. Although information and warnings made available by local, federal, and state agencies are helpful, acting confidently and correctly when an emergency occurs is the best way to reduce personal loss. For this reason, creating one of the aforementioned kits is a wise course of action.

A durable knapsack or backpack should be used to pack the necessary items one requires after a life-threatening incident like a flood, terrorist attack, or fire. Water is an essential consideration, and each individual in the party must have at least one gallon per day. It is also important for each person to have a three day supply of foods that are not perishable. Including a can opener in the kit must not be overlooked if one will be packing canned fare.

A battery operated radio is an item that no one should overlook when preparing an emergency kit. This is because updates and changes in status of the emergency are typically reported by radio. A flashlight is also an important item, and one should ensure that batteries for these objects are not expired.

Gloves, dust masks, and other protective gear are also ideal objects to add to a kit of this type. Important medications should be placed in waterproof containers. The latter should be childproof as well if youngsters are present, as children are just as apt to become curious about medications when traveling as they would be when at home. It is also a good idea to include a basic first aid kit among the objects one will be packing if evacuation is required.

Appropriate clothing and blankets must also be added to the kit. Camping attire is the best choice, and one should not forget warm socks and comfortable shoes. This is especially important if those in the party will be outdoors for extended periods during cold weather.

The tote bag or knapsack chosen should be waterproof, if possible. In addition, the items inside should be properly arranged and the bag should be easy to carry. Premade kits of this type can be found for those who need assistance with organizing such an ensemble.

In today's modern world, the importance of preparing for emergencies cannot be understated. If executed properly, such action will prevent harm, injury, and ultimately save lives. For this reason, many families choose to invest in a 72 hour emergency kit.
