Plain Sailing Planning For Cruises

By Poppy Hill

Planning a cruise trip with your family or partner and are unsure of what to expect on your first ever trip. The following are just a few suggestions to improve your stay.

A large number of passengers and crew on board first time cruisers will be a little daunted by the sheer size and scope of what is in front of them. A map will help you along the way and prevent you from getting lost. It will not take you long before you become familiar with all your surroundings.

Another suggestion would be to take a bag with you when you board the ship. At the start of the trip everything is a bit chaotic with staff introducing themselves and boarding cards being made ready so your luggage may take a little time to reach your cabin. As you don't want to waste time waiting pack a few light items such as swimwear and sun cream so you are ready to hit the pool and sunbathe as soon as you arrive.

Leave all your good jewellery behind at home when on the boat. Most of the crew are not wealthy and the last thing you want to do is upset them by flaunting your wealth. Small pieces of costume jewellery perhaps would be more appropriate.

Walk around the ship all the time. This is not only good exercise but a fun way to have a look at your ship and what is on board and where everything is situated. This gives you the best way to familiarise yourself with all the entertainment on board and where the best hang outs are for you.

Tips often confuse travellers, How much do I tip? Who do I tip? There is a guide when you book to who best to tip. On the whole if you tip the crew as often as you can so as to give them a little extra money to spend on themselves as the cruise pay is generally not a lot of money.

Last thing at night passengers are encouraged to move around their quarters or back from any show to be as quiet as they can and keep in mind any passengers who may be sleeping while you are on your way back to your cabin.

Best advice of all is to plan your daily events to take advantage of everything which is on offer to travellers.
