Experience Romance And History With A Horse Drawn Carriage

By Annabelle Holman

Long before the invention of the different types of engine, people had to use animal power to get them from one location to another. Wagons pulled by oxen and donkeys were popular for transporting goods but when a fancier type of transport was called for, nothing could beat carriages pulled by fine horses. To relive the glamour and romance of those days, people from Sherwood Park AB to New York NY treat themselves to a ride in a horse drawn carriage.

Most often, carriages these days are used as a tourist attraction. They're one of the most popular ways to explore Central Park in New York, for instance. Many living-history and open-air museums offer rides in carriages too and these are often a highlight or young children.

Sometimes the mode of transport is not only there for the benefit of the tourists. It may be one of the only ways to get around in a place. An example is Mackinac Island in Michigan, where the ingredients for the famous fudge are delivered the old-fashioned way due to the fact that there are no cars on the island.

Because horses and carriages evoke romance, they're perfect for a date. It's wise though to bring something warm, especially if you're taking your date for a ride at night or on a snowy day. Now you just need to pack a picnic basket and remember to bring a bottle of good wine or champagne to sip on during the journey.

Horses and carriages don't only add romance to an event. They add pomp and ceremony too. Just look at almost any royal wedding and how not only the bridal couple but the guests too use this mode of transport. Of course you don't need to have blue blood to bring some of this glamour to your own wedding. You just need to contact your local stables.

While royalty is most often seen in stately carriages at formal events, one member of the British royal family has helped to add a twist to the tradition. Prince Philip gave up polo to take up a competitive sport known as carriage driving instead. He even helped to write the rules of this equestrian sport, which includes disciplines such as dressage.

When you decide to rent horses and a carriage, for whatever reason, you need to choose the right ones for the occasion. There are different styles of carriages, from large and stately ones to ones that are lightweight for sports. It's also important to check the health of the horses before you make the final decision because unfortunately some owners are unscrupulous and mistreat their animals.

You don't have to go to a city where horses and carriages are a tourist attraction to enjoy a ride in this old-fashioned mode of transport. Many stables rent out carriages too. Simply look online or in the local telephone directory to find one for that special event.
