The Best Area For Bonefishing Key West Florida

By Michelle Howe

Many fishermen decide to go bonefishing Key West giving the idyllic surroundings for this vacation. The warm, shallow waters off of the Keys provide the perfect habitat for these fish. Mainly a silvery grey color, but with a darker back they can sometimes be hard for the untrained eye to spot. Even the locals often refer to them as the grey ghost.

They do like the warmer waters, and if it gets too cold will move off of the flats and into warmer waters. This is why it makes sense to get in touch with a local guide. They know the waters and the conditions, and they certainly know their fish.

A lot of fishermen have heard tales of flats fishing, but have yet to try it themselves. Imagine it, just the local guide and two of you on a very small skiff. Once you have reached the flats the engine is shut off and secured. The guide climbs onto the platform and starts to slowly pole over the flats.

As he is higher than you he gets to see the bonefish first. He will then tell you in what direction they are, using the clock face method. With 12 o'clock dead ahead, 2 o'clock to your right and 10 o'clock to your left. He will give you the distance in boat lengths. It is then up to you to cast in the direction and at the distance given.

When a fish strikes you will know all about it. This is a fish designed for speed. They are also a cautious and clever fish, it can develop into a battle of wills between you and the fish. One reason why so many people get attracted to this sport.

Good quality specimens are out there waiting for you to hook them. You might try to do so by using light tackle or by fly fishing, the choice is yours. A timely reminder do your rigging the night before you go fishing, space is very limited on a skiff, and any rigging that needs to be done before you fish, means less fishing.

Fly fishing on the flats is like nothing you have ever tried before. The results can make it all worthwhile though. Most guides have their own equipment and it is ideal to ask him about tips and pointers over any recommended equipment, you would be wise to listen to what he has to say.

You will soon come to understand just why there are quite so many fishing competitions held there. Fishing with just light tackle is both exhilarating and fun. Try using live shrimp as bait, something that these fish really enjoy. Just listen to the guide for where to cast, drop the bait before your fish and wait for the battle to commence.

So for any fisherman who wants to experience that something a little different, bonefishing Key West is for you. The fish are often above 4 lbs, so bigger than those of the Bahamas, and more difficult to catch. Discover for yourself why so many return to fish there year after year.
